Humorous Wedding Speech †Reasons I Admire the Groom Essay

Humorous Wedding Speech – Reasons I Admire the Groom Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen - I’m not an experienced public speaker, so I find it easier just to read the speech word for word. In fact, I’ve practiced it almost daily for about a week and a half now, so that I know it very well. It’s a tip that I read in a book about public speaking. I’ve also been drinking profusely to help calm my pre-speech nerves. I made that tip up myself. Laughter Yes, I am a little nervous about being the best man. But I am more bothered with the title of best man. Saying that Im the best man is saying quite a bit. If Im the best man, why is Maria marrying Karl? So Im just happy saying that I am a pretty good man, because today Karl is the†¦show more content†¦He never used them. 3) His determination – most patently demonstrated as a cub scout at camp, where Karl held the record for avoiding the camp latrine – or the ‘brown barrel collector’ as we used to call it. Some cubs reckoned he could last a whole week, and I’m sure it was this early training in discipline that helped Karl on to a successful career. 4) His vision – we can see for ourselves how gorgeous Maria looks today, which proves the one thing I’ve always known about Karl - that he’s definitely a man of vision - often blurred, sometimes double, but nonetheless a man of vision who’s been lucky enough to have spotted a real beauty. 5) His charm – having taken the decision to propose to Maria, he whisked her off to Paris for a romantic weekend. They dined at expensive restaurants, took passionate walks along the river, went up the Eiffel Tower†¦ then he took her back to Weymouth and popped the question back at the flat. Now that sort of style is beyond the reach of the ordinary man. 6) His sentimental side - what with the way he fell to his knees and wept when he first discovered I’d organized strippers for his stag night (bachelor’s party). 7) His unwavering self confidence – which is particularly evident today. It has been an expensive few weeks for Karl but he doesn’t look in the least

Essay on Pepe le Moko - 664 Words

Julien Duvivier’s film â€Å"Pà ©pà © le Moko† is a remarkable story, and a powerful personal account of French colonial life. The socio-political subtext of the story is an important one, which brings to the forefront the particular allure of Casbah and the idiosyncrasies of its inhabitants. This subtext of the narrative connotes the desire and fascination with the exotic. Jean Gabin’s character is a thief, who while running from the law becomes immersed in the maze of the city of Casbah. In light of Edward Said’s ideas of Orientalism, specifically in terms of the cultural exchanges that take place in the affiliation of colonialism, the foreign element (as an â€Å"other†) can become a model with which Western civilization defines itself. The†¦show more content†¦The intersection of this similarity is in the fact that the girlfriends taken by most of the members of his gang are native women, and correspondingly the way that the native women are shown occasionally as prostitutes. The magnetism that is created around Pà ©pà © and Gaby is related to this. His fascination with her is an exhibition of his longing for the familiarity of Paris and the sanctity of his past, a familiarity that is di stant to him in Casbah. In her, Pà ©pà © is reminded of life outside the walls of Casbah. His gradual rejection of Ines in favor of Gaby suggests his shifting disposition and his consuming desire for Paris, possibly even a disgust of the colonialist enterprise on a deeper level. Gaby’s jewelry is a constant reminder of these ideas. The diamond is one of the most readily identifiable symbols of the colonial process, a reminder of the exploitation of resources by the British in South Africa. Gaby is attracted to Pà ©pà © in a similar way. The radical distinction that he embodies as a gangster differentiates him from the upper-class, mainland Frenchmen that she would typically be acquainted with. The fragility of Pà ©pà ©Ã¢â‚¬â„¢s relationship with Gaby is that it is on the verge of intangibility. On the average day she could just as easily be his victim, as the cash value of her jewels are the main focus of the gang.

Captivity Of North America And Continued As A Significant...

Captivity narratives began with the settlement of North America and continued as a significant genre in American literature until the end of the nineteenth century. The first captivity narratives are believed to have been created by Native Americans who were captured by early Spanish explorers. However, the genre commonly refers to the accounts written by European settlers who were abducted by Native Americans. European settlers were fleeing to the â€Å"new land† in order to escape religious persecutions, in order for that to happen, they had to take the land from the Native Americans which later progressed to kidnapping and captivity of some early settlers. Both authors clearly establish a sudden attack in the beginning of the narratives. Later during their time in captivity, both authors make it clear that they are forced to change locations due to a forced march by the Indians that took them captive. Examples of sale or trade are evident in each narrative. One key example is when Mary Rowlandson states she was â€Å"sold to King Philip s wife’s sister by a Narragansett Indian† in her narrative â€Å"The Sovereignty and Goodness of God† .(132) Finally these two narratives are completely different in the last key point in the â€Å"captivity narrative outline†, the ransom or escape. Ethnography is a hidden trait found in early American Literature captivity narratives.
