Gilgamesh (needs better title) Kyle Frum Experience is an important part of being an epic hero. This quality allows someone to succeed where others will always fail. Gilgamesh displays far more experience and knowledge than Sundiata, thus making him a better hero. He displays 3 main qualities that show he has experience. He is far more powerful and influential at the beginning of the story, he has more success in his early adventures, and (((((???))))). "Epic" heroes such as Sundiata simply cannot compete with someone like Gilgamesh. He is already a strong, powerful king when Sundiata is crawling around on all fours. The first page in Gilgamesh already shows his power. It states "a goddess made him, [Gilgamesh] strong as a savage bull." However, strength is not all he has. Gilgamesh is the king of Uruk, proven by the text, "Gilgamesh the king." This is a very good position, as Uruk is a powerful and large city, and "in Uruk he [Gilgamesh] built walls, a great rampart." This proves that he must have done many great deeds. A final clear indicator of Sundiata's early weakness is the f...

In Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, he emphasizes a chapter on â€Å"The Man I Killed†, which describes the characteristics of a young Vietnamese man in which O’Brien may or may not have killed with a grenade. The novel is not chronologically sequenced, which leaves more room for the reader to engage in a critical thought process that fully bridges the author’s mind to their own. In O’Brien’s chapter, â€Å"The Man I Killed†, he attempts to humanize the enemy in a way that draws little separation between the enemy and himself by relating the enemy’s life prior to the war to his, and illustrates the war through the eyes of the soldiers who fought it. To understand â€Å"The Man I Killed†, the reader must first enlighten themselves upon O’Brien’s†¦show more content†¦It wasn’t until he went to war and was faced with the enemy that he would realize that the enemy wasn’t so di fferent after all. â€Å"His jaw was in his throat, his upper lip and teeth were gone, his one eye was shut, his other eye was a star-shaped hole...,† writes O’Brien as he studies the deceased enemy (118). Throughout the novel, the author shows consistency with repeating stories and lines in a way to present a greater image. He reminds the reader of details the elaborate his larger view. When he writes of the man he killed, he wants the reader to imagine themselves in his shoes, as he imagined himself in the enemies’. As he carefully studies the dead man, he imagines how the boy found himself in the war. By relating American society to the boy’s village of My Khe, he bridges similarities connecting the two by a culture that promotes defending one’s land and ways of life. By saying, â€Å"he would have been taught that to defend the land was a man’s highest duty and highest privilege,† he shows there is minimal difference between how m ost Americans view the military and the duty of the villagers in My Khe (119). Although he had not known the exact history of the boy, he attempted to illustrate in his own mind what his life may have been like prior to the invasion. The inability for O’Brien to walk away from the body as Kiowa continued to pry him away says he was troubled by the similarities. A Complex Character Of Odysseus - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 5 Words: 1608 Downloads: 3 Date added: 2019/04/01 Category Literature Essay Level High school Tags: Odyssey Essay Did you like this example? When comparing two separate bodies within a particular story, one has to look at the themes present within the story and critically discuss how they differ within each time period based off the environments and behaviours of people within those particular settings; in this case, the motives, actions and themes we are comparing are those presented in â€Å"the hero’s wandering† and their changes or effects in â€Å"the hero’s return home†. The most fascinating aspect of this story is the realistic complexity of a character, which relates to the meaning of a complex character – one who engages in more themes within the given story and acting accordingly, in this case, our prime example is â€Å"wily Odysseus†, â€Å"the man of twists and turns†.. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "A Complex Character Of Odysseus" essay for you Create order The Journey compared with Ithaca: Throughout the entire story presented in The Odyssey, two episodes of Odysseus’ journey and adventures have been described by the poet in the book. The other episodes are recounted by Odysseus himself or are retold by the bard during his encounter with the Phaeacians. The scenes are displayed in such a manner to represent an important shift in dynamic within the story; transitioning from being concealed by the Nymph Calypso (her name means â€Å"concealer† which describes the â€Å"trial† associated with her within the story and what her encounter with Odysseus would initially mean) on her island, Ogygia, for seven years to his encounter with the Phaeacians – â€Å"those who convoy without hurt to all men† representing the shift from not returning home to returning home. Breaking the â€Å"curse† said to be on Odysseus by the god of wind – Aeolus – and returning home while asleep. During his wanderings, Odysseus encounters many deities or beings close to them, descendants of gods, prophesies and beasts, which are useful to the reader as it conveys that the world that Odysseus is in is a world beyond man and that certain events which influence his journey are things beyond his control. It also plays a huge role on whether or not he may in fact return home – experiencing the wrath of an ocean-God is not something to be taken lightly, especially when it’s his will denying you of your â€Å"nostos†. The beings encountered through this epic tale includes: the Phaeacians who lived near the Cyclopes. Their king, Alcinius is a descendent of Poseidon and is the great grandson of the king of the giants. Other characters include Poseidon – the god of the oceans, the nymph Calypso, the sorceress Circe etc. â€Å"The way these mortals blame the gods. From us alone, they say come all their miseries, yes, but they themselves, with their own reckless ways, compound their pains beyond their proper share.† – Zeus, book 1, line 39. –this is indicating that gods play no part in the outcome of tragic events, if no blame can be pointed towards them during these times, one may also say the same for positive outcomes. Gods are neutral and just – although the revenge against Odysseus and the Phaeacians outside Ithaca may indicate otherwise. These all differ from what is faced in Ithaca. My idea of Ithaca is an â€Å"isolated† island which constitutes as the representation of mankind, essentially showing their potential within a story which possesses many deities and beasts far beyond our wildest imagination. I also feel as though in order to show the potential of mankind, the presence of such deities should feel non-existent. As the story has it however, the exception of Athena as she is portrayed as a mere guide or disguised as a mentor for characters like Telemachus or Odysseus, although she chooses not to interfere directly with battles and potential triumphs for our hero, trusting their character and having them be victorious on their own, creating their own significant outcome past their initial fate (in Odysseus case – returning home). This was exhibited during Odysseus’ attack against the suitors. During the course of the story, it is established that due to Odysseus delayed return, he may not in fact return. This creates a stir among the nobleman and the families of strength within the island, thinking that there may be an opportunity to gain control of the palace after having the Queen, Penelope, remarry. After the suitors had an extensive period of time abusing the household, Odysseus returns and plans an eventual assault, which would take place after testing those whom he could trust as allies, having Athena as his guide – she did nothing but indirectly assist Odysseus with a disguise, information and serving as a pacifier who alleviates the anxiety and loneliness of Penelope, having them gain their own â€Å"kleos†. I often believe that it’s in the underworld where Odysseus concludes that a tactful approach to be the better course of action, being discrete and taking time as later, it is there where he meets the shade of Achilles and congratulates him on the â€Å"kleos† gained from his battle in Troy. Achilles disapproves and questions the hero code, dying for glory, stating that the â€Å"poorest life surpasses the noblest death†. He then began questioning the life of his own son, thus signifying that importance of family over the glory of war. Also the shade of Agamemnon who tells the story of his own wife murdering him upon his return, installing some doubt in Odysseus’ mind of what might be in store for him upon his own return. The spiritual growth of Odysseus through the story: (during his disguise in Ithaca as opposed to what’s present in the Cyclops cave): Odysseus growth is less linear thus giving us a more realistic character as opposed to other Epics, sporting a hero who overcomes all through sheer strength and determination, changing his entire essence to overcome some antagonist or tragic circumstance. Prior to leaving to fight in the Trojan War twenty years before, he was already a well-established hero among the Greek forces. The journey of his â€Å"nostos† and the trials faced by him are more related to the refinement and polishing of spirit. The growth can be more easily identified by the wisdom built from the experiences faced within his journey that would make him a better king once he returns and resumes his title of king of Ithaca. â€Å"Cyclops, if any mortal man ever asks you who it was that inflicted upon your eye this shameful blinding, tell him that you were blinded by Odysseus, sacker of cities. Laertes is his father, and he makes his home on Ithaca† – Odysseus boasts after he escapes the clutches of the Cyclops Polyphemus. Early on, Odysseus feels compelled to taunt Polyphemus the Cyclops as he escapes from the one-eyed monster. Odysseus shouts his real name at the giant, making it possible for Polyphemus to identify his tormentor to Poseidon, the Cyclops father. This brings Odysseus, and the Phaeacians, serious problems later. When he returns to Ithaca, however, Odysseus behaves more prudently. He enters in disguise in order to obtain information about the enemy as well as knowledge of whom to trust. Even when he is taunted and assaulted by the suitors or his own servants, Odysseus manages to maintain his composure and postpone striking back. When he does strike, the time is perfect. By the end of the epic, Odysseus seems to be a wiser, more perceptive leader than he might have been had he sailed straight home from Troy. Hospitality: (A comparison between the unknown Phaeacian hospitality and what is known but not received within Ithaca) As a modern reader, the term hospitality and its huge role within society is a strange concept. Fagles and Knox both refer to hospitality as a dominant part of â€Å"the only code of moral conduct that obtains in the insecure world of ‘The Odyssey’†. It is essential as it highlights civility – it’s an opportunity to demonstrate your quality and hope that the act is reciprocated. Therefore the lack of it encourages the reader to judge and have an understanding of the particulars civility. (Polyphemus – eating the crew / Calypso – concealing and not allowing Odysseus to leave) The gods of Olympus can’t be all against this man who’s come to mingle among our noble people. . . . . Give the stranger food and drink, my girls. Nausicaa During his â€Å"nostos† a plea is given from Athena to Zeus to allow the King to return home during Poseidon’s absence, it is after this that he finds his way onto â€Å"Phaeacian soil†. The time spent within the country is fairly short due to the hosts’ superb hospitality, adhering to all the norms and customs which were acknowledged as good hospitality within those times. Offering food and drink and having some entertainment to follow – the bard which helps Odysseus recount his travels). This completely contradicts the hospitality given to Oddyseus upon his arrival to his home, Ithaca. Disguised as a beggar, he isn’t free to do as he pleases in his own palace, constantly having to accept the abuse and insults handed to him by his own goatherd and maidservant, even his countrymen disrespects him by attempting to court his wife. If hospitality is something that is directly related to the civility of a person and/or a kingdom, then a King should be the most generous host and even more so with his own. This is contradicted when Odysseus, disguised as a beggar, begs Antinous, one of the lead people attempting to court Penelope, for some food and is denied. And is initially what makes Odysseus believe that not all â€Å"kings† and worthy of being called King. And as a reader, one may clearly see that sometimes, the beasts are also among our own, instead of what we may deem â€Å"bestial†.

The Prevelance of Diabetes in the Hispanic Culture

The earliest inhabitants of Mexico are believed to have been hunters who migrated from Asia approximately 18,000 years ago. Over time they built organized civilizations with distinct cultures like the Olmec, Teotihuacan, Mayan, Toltec, Zapotec, Mixtec, and Aztecs. These societies excelled in the fields of art, architecture, mathematics, astronomy, and agriculture. In 1517 the Spanish explorer Francisco Fernà ¡ndez de Cà ³rdoba landed on the Yucatà ¡n, peninsula and four years later the Spanish Conquistador Hernando Cortà ©z conquered the Aztec empire. For the next 300 years, Mexico, or New Spain, would remain under colonial rule. In the Spring of 1846 American forces quickly occupied New Mexico and California, then invaded parts of Northeastern Mexico, Northwest Mexico and captured Mexico City. In the fall of 1847 the war ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This event was the greatest territorial expansion of the United States and was responsible for the annexation of approximately 80,000 Mexican citizens. In 1910 the Mexican Revolution forced Mexicans to cross the border into the United States, in search of safety and employment. In 1917 with the advent of World War 1 factories in war-related industries in the United States desperately need more workers. Latinos from the Southwest begin moving north in large numbers in search of employment (Meyer, Sherman, Deeds, 1995). The migration of people from Mexico to the United States has been a regular occurrence for

Types of Nationalism and Politics Samples †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Types of Nationalism and Politics. Answer: Introduction: The national spirit, as said by Johann herder, reflects a continuity with the past of the country (Heywood, 2017). This helps the nostalgic aspects of the politics to be easily empathized by the subjects. On the other hand, liberal nationalism says that everyone should embrace diversity as exposure to different ways of life gives important knowledge and inner acceptance regarding how to live together, as a part of a greater community that is spread across the globe, and transcends borders. Conservative nationalism and liberal nationalism are two most important sides of the nationalism thoughts. Conservative nationalism rotates around three principles which all talk about the fundamentals of conservative social harmony. Liberal or civic nationalism believes in a lifestyle and set of choices that are adapted after being exposed a number of different lifestyles and cultures Different Types of Nationalism: Conservative nationalism talks about a more defensive way of life and mindset which aims to establish a homogeneous national identity (Heywood, 2017). The mythological characters and tales are infused with the society to create a sense of kinship to unite the entire nation and all the citizens (Heywood, 2017). The final aspect of conservative nationalism is derived from an organic point of view, where the ideas about a nation or a group are derived from a primitive instinct to bond with the people we think we share a common bond. Liberal or civic nationalism believes in a lifestyle and set of choices that are adapted after being exposed a number of different lifestyles and cultures. While nationalism does have its advantages and good sides, where it liberates nations and people from tyranny and the shackles of imperialism, it has also instigated many humans to turn at fellow humans simply because they come from a different country or belongs to a different religious, ethnic or racial group. Liberalism, on the other hand preaches acceptance and allows many different choices and lifestyles to be incorporated within a way of life to be a global citizen (Heywood, 2017). Pauline Hanson says Australian Muslims are a significant drain on the public purs (News.com.au., 2017) Paul Hanson compared Islam to diseases which is significant for the country to vaccinate. Pauline believes in the ideas of Australian Conservatism, Economic Nationalism, Anti-immigration, anti- multiculturalism and anti-Islam. Through her speech on Islam and her belief in these ideologies, reflect her conservative mindset. The values of Australia would check the people who are entering the country (Heywood, 2017). Pauline Hansons One Nation believes in the law of Federalism and regard that the Australians belong to a federation of the states. Her conservative mindset elaborated on opposing the infiltration of Islam in Australia and its totalitarian ideology which obstructs the countrys democracy. As a conservative and believer in anti- migration, she believes in banning the burqa in the public places. Hanson believes that it is important to stop Islamists along their families from receiving any kinds of benefits from the country. (Shroff, Venkatraman Zhang, 2013). Against the above mentioned speech of Paul Hanson, Dough Cameron contradicted with Paul Hanson stated that Muslims Make contributions to this country that you will never make while addressing the parliament(Sbs.com.au, 2017) He being the part of Australian Labor party, he solely believes in the ideas of Liberalism, Socialism, Laborism and Pragmatism. These are the ideologies, which Dough Cameron believes, and this further makes him a liberalist (Barry Osbourne, 2013). He supported the Islam community and showed full support to the trends of multi-culturalism. He relies upon the belief that Australians must stand shoulder to shoulder with the Islamic community of Australia. The liberal party unlike conservatives believes in multi culturalism, giving respect to each other, committed to tolerance and mutual understanding. He believes to continue work for the country Australia by stopping the bigotry, misfortune and prejudice which are directed against the Islamic community of Australia. He further states that the Islamic community is continuing to do best for the nation and Australia as a country would look forward to embrace religious and cultural harmony. By adopting the policy of multiculturalism, the country is welcoming different immigrants to make their contribution in the economy of the country (Heywood, 2017). His ideas and attempt to build an Australian community through incorporating the Muslim culture in it shows his liberal views. Conclusion: Paul Hanson respects the countrys culture and she is totally opposite to the settling down of the people in the country who are belonging to the different culture. Her belief in anti multi culturalism and Dough Camerons believe in the multi culturalism is making them believe that they belong to the different parties and the ideologies of their party make them different from one another prominently. You give your hair one last fluff while glancing quickly at the mirror as you grab the purse off of the hallway table. A soft kiss greets you, and you love birds fly off to the 8 o’ clock reservation at Olive Garden (that he insisted was ridiculously difficult to get even though everyone knows you don’t need to make a reservation at Olive Garden.) While awaiting the chocolate dipping sauce for your favorite zeppoles (you’re a sucker for fried delicacies) he clears his throat and gently caresses your hands. â€Å"Listen, babe, we need to talk.† He pauses while you take a sip of your peach iced tea and nod in encouragement. â€Å"We’ve been together for a long time now. I love you so much, and I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately about us and our future.† This is it. It’s actually happening. You flash a subtle smile and lean in a bit closer. He continues, â€Å"I’ve thought about it. I love you; you’re the most important person in my life-† â€Å"YES! Yes, I do, I do!† â€Å"Really? I’m so relieved to hear that!† â€Å"Of course! I love you too everything has been amazing but-† â€Å"We’ve been together for too long. It’s time to see other people, see what else is out there. I’m so relieved to know that you feel the same way,† he finishes. You give him a puzzled look. What? â€Å"No. I was going to say, but it’s time to take our relationship to the next level. Wait. You’re breaking up with me?† This never once crossed your mind; after all, if not today, then he was probably going to propose, like, next week. This is insane. I mean after all the time you’ve been together, how could he do this to you? The conversation ends with â€Å"I’m sorry’s† and â€Å"I understand’s†. All the while you’re trying to keep your cool because there’s no way he can know that you’re actually a mess inside and that part of you wants to rip his head off. The car ride home is awkward and tense. There’s so much you want to say but you keep it inside, knowing that as soon as you open your mouth, you’ll break down in tears. You exchange a quick goodbye and almost fall out of the car in an attempt to get out of there as soon as possible. As soon as you shut the door behind you, there’s no holding you back. The sobs become louder and louder as the minutes tick by. You crawl onto the couch with a pint of Oreo cookie ice cream and manage to swallow large spoonfuls in between sobs. Cupid is a jerk. After an hour of nonstop eating, crying and an overplayed episode of America’s most loved family, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, you call it a night and doze off right there on the couch. At around 3am anxiety kicks in and you’re awakened to the sound of your rapidly beating heart. This isn’t over, Henry. In an effort to mend the broken relationship, you go ahead and give him a call. After all, this isn’t a break up. It’s merely a misunderstanding between two people who love each other deeply. This was definitely not mutual, which means that you didn’t really bre ak up. After thirty calls and fifteen voicemails there is still no response. That’s okay. You can always call him in the morning. Better yet, why don’t you stop by his office with his favorite chocolate donut and a coffee? Do whatever it is that you have to do. If you can’t catch him there, that’s fine, just drop by his apartment after work with a box of pepperoni pizza. How about you send him a quick text explaining how you want to return all of the gifts you’ve received from him over the years because you â€Å"just can’t stand to see them†? He’ll definitely respond to that! He’ll be forced to talk to you. He’s obviously just confused and doesn’t know what he wants, and it’s your job to let him know that this isn’t acceptable. After all, you didn’t waste 48 months, 208 weeks, and 1,460 days of your precious time devoted to this one individual in our massive universe, just to end up getting d umped. There is a double standard between men and women (as with everything else in life) regarding love and relationships. When a woman decides to fight for lost love she is labeled as the â€Å"crazy ex-girlfriend†. Maybe she doesn’t want the relationship back, maybe she just wants to get closure, try to understand what went wrong. Did you ever think about that? No, because you were too busy complaining to your friends and family about how crazy she is. When a guy fights for lost love he’s â€Å"a hopeless romantic.† Let women fight for love in peace without having to be labeled crazy for doing so. Let them cry into their double chocolate chip ice cream as they watch The Titanic for the hundredth time. Let them call twenty times at four in the morning. Let them stalk you on social media as their heart desires. Let them plan casual run-ins at your favorite local bar so you can see how totally awesome they’re doing without you. Worst case scenario is you have to file a restraining order.
